Rugby Moneyline Bet
What is a Rugby Moneyline Bet? How MLR Moneyline Betting Works
The simplest way to bet on Major League Rugby — pick a winner, collect your payout
If you’re new to betting on rugby, start here. The moneyline is the most straightforward bet you can make: pick which team wins the match. No point spreads. No complicated math. Just pick the winner.
With Major League Rugby now available on DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, and Caesars, moneyline betting is about to become a lot more popular in America. Here’s everything you need to know.
What is a Moneyline Bet?
A moneyline bet is a wager on which team will win the match outright. That’s it.
You’re not betting on the margin of victory. You’re not betting on total points. You’re simply picking who wins.
Example:
New England Free Jacks -145
Seattle Seawolves +125
-
Bet on the Free Jacks (-145): They need to win the match. If they win by 1 point or 50 points, you win your bet.
-
Bet on the Seawolves (+125): They need to win the match. Any victory counts.
The numbers next to each team are the odds, which tell you how much you’ll win (or need to bet) based on a $100 baseline.
How to Read Moneyline Odds
Negative Odds = Favorite
When you see a minus sign, that team is expected to win. The number tells you how much you need to bet to win $100.
Free Jacks -145 - Bet $145 to win $100 - If they win: You get back $245 (your $145 stake + $100 profit) - If they lose: You lose your $145
Positive Odds = Underdog
When you see a plus sign, that team is the underdog. The number tells you how much you win on a $100 bet.
Seawolves +125 - Bet $100 to win $125 - If they win: You get back $225 (your $100 stake + $125 profit) - If they lose: You lose your $100

Why Bet the Moneyline in Rugby?
Rugby is a physical, unpredictable sport. Upsets happen. A team can dominate possession and territory but lose on a late try or a clutch penalty kick.
Here’s why moneyline betting works well for MLR:
1. No Need to Worry About the Spread
Point spread betting adds complexity. With a moneyline, you don’t care if your team wins by 1 or 21 — a win is a win.
2. Underdog Value
Rugby underdogs win more often than you’d think. Home advantage matters. Weather matters. Travel fatigue matters. A +200 underdog who wins 35% of the time is actually a profitable bet over the long run.
3. Simple for New Bettors
If you’re just getting into rugby betting, start with moneylines. Learn the teams, watch the matches, and build your intuition before getting into spreads and props.
Moneyline vs. Point Spread: What’s the Difference?
|
Bet Type |
What You’re Betting On |
Example |
|---|---|---|
|
Moneyline |
Who wins the match |
Free Jacks -145 to win |
|
Point Spread |
Margin of victory |
Free Jacks -6.5 (must win by 7+) |
With a point spread, the favorite has to win by a certain number of points. With a moneyline, they just have to win.
When to bet moneyline: - When you like a favorite but think the spread is too high - When you want to back an underdog without needing them to cover - When you want simplicity
When to bet the spread: - When you think the favorite will win big (spread pays better than moneyline) - When you want better odds on a favorite
Real MLR Moneyline Example
Let’s say the Chicago Hounds are playing Old Glory DC:
Chicago Hounds -180
Old Glory DC +155
Scenario 1: You bet $180 on Chicago -180 - Chicago wins 24-17 - You win $100 - Total payout: $280
Scenario 2: You bet $100 on Old Glory +155 - Old Glory wins 21-20 on a last-minute penalty - You win $155 - Total payout: $255
Scenario 3: You bet $100 on Old Glory +155 - Chicago wins 31-14 - You lose your $100
Notice that the margin doesn’t matter. Chicago could win by 3 or by 30 — the outcome of your moneyline bet is the same.
Finding Value in MLR Moneylines
The key to profitable betting isn’t just picking winners — it’s finding value. Value exists when the odds underestimate a team’s true chances of winning.
How to Spot Value
-
Home advantage: MLR teams often perform significantly better at home. If an away favorite is priced at -200 but historically struggles on the road, there might be value on the home underdog.
-
Schedule spots: Look for teams on short rest, long travel, or coming off emotional wins/losses.
-
Weather: Rugby is played in all conditions. Rain and wind can level the playing field between a dominant attacking team and a scrappy defensive squad.
-
Lineup news: Key injuries or rested players can swing a match. If a star player is out and the line hasn’t moved, there’s opportunity.
The Math Behind Value
If you think the Seawolves have a 45% chance to beat the Free Jacks, but the sportsbook has them at +150 (implied 40%), that’s a value bet.
Over time, betting on value — not just winners — is what separates profitable bettors from the rest.

Moneyline Betting Tips for MLR
-
Start simple: Bet moneylines until you understand the teams and the league.
-
Watch the matches: Rugby rewards bettors who actually watch. You’ll notice tendencies, momentum shifts, and matchup edges that don’t show up in stats.
-
Respect home advantage: MLR home teams have a meaningful edge. Don’t blindly fade road favorites.
-
Shop for odds: A -140 at one book vs. -155 at another makes a real difference over time.
-
Manage your bankroll: Don’t bet more than you can afford to lose. Flat betting (same amount each game) is a solid strategy for beginners.
