New England Free Jacks

The dynasty continues. New England enters 2026 as the prohibitive championship favorite (+150) despite significant roster turnover. How? Their system is simply that good.

Captain Jacob Norris anchors the second row, while reserve captain Joseph Johnston brings veteran leadership off the bench. The forward pack features international talent like Tayne Hemopo and Kienan De La Rambelje, with Nathan Salmon providing go-forward at No. 8.

In the backs, the Wilson brothers — Mitchell (scrum-half) and Bailey (fly-half) — orchestrate the attack. Ethan McVeigh, a San Diego native, starts at outside center in what should be an emotional homecoming. Filipe Vakasiuola offers strike power on the wing.

Head coach Ryan Martin has proven he can integrate new talent seamlessly. Preseason was dominant: an 80-10 scrimmage win showcased the Free Jacks’ depth and championship mentality.

California Legion

The Legion enters Week 2 searching for answers after surrendering 39 points to Anthem RC last Saturday. The merged roster — combining San Diego Legion and RFC Los Angeles — showed flashes but was undone by defensive lapses.

Vice-captain Joseph Taufete’e leads from fullback, while Joseph Mano (VC) provides experience off the bench. International fly-half Edward Timpson will need to control tempo better than Week 1. The pack features Benjamin Sugars at No. 8 and Rory Van Vugt in the second row.

Head coach Dave Dennis knows his squad needs a complete 80-minute performance. The good news: California has legitimate backline talent with Coby Miln and Chase Jones out wide. The bad news: they’re facing the league’s gold standard.

reaking Down the Odds

Moneyline

New England is a massive road favorite, with prices ranging from -475 (FanDuel) to -600 (Caesars/Fanatics). For California upset backers, FanDuel at +410 offers the best longshot value, followed by Fanatics at +350.

Spread

There’s significant line variance across books — as much as 4 points difference:

  • DraftKings: NE -8.5 (Best for New England backers)

  • FanDuel: NE -9.5

  • Caesars/Fanatics: NE -12.5 (Best for California backers)

If you like the Free Jacks, DraftKings at -8.5 (-115) is the clear value. If you’re taking the points with California, Caesars or Fanatics at +12.5 gives you extra cushion.

Totals

Only DraftKings has posted a total: Over/Under 57 (-120/-115). California’s leaky defense (39 points allowed in Week 1) combined with New England’s elite attack suggests points will flow.

Three-Way Market

FanDuel is the only book offering draw odds at +2000. Draws are rare in rugby — and even rarer against New England.

Our Pick

New England Free Jacks -8.5 (DraftKings) — The three-peat champions don’t lose season openers, and they certainly don’t lose to teams coming off 39-point defensive disasters.

Four points of line value at DraftKings is significant. New England’s system is elite, the Wilson brothers will control tempo, and Ethan McVeigh will be highly motivated playing in front of family and friends in San Diego.

California has talent but lacks cohesion. Expect the Free Jacks to pull away in the second half as their championship depth takes over.

Over 57 (DraftKings) — California can’t stop anyone right now, and New England’s attack is the best in MLR. Both teams will score.

Prediction: New England 38, California 22
