MLR Week 7 Wrap-Up
Rugby United New York 47 – 21 Utah Warriors
A spring snowstorm in Herriman, Utah wasn’t enough to slow down Rugby United New York (4-1) as they handed the Utah Warriors (1-3-1) their second-straight loss 47-21 on Friday night.
Four different members of Rugby United New York scored tries to help knockoff the Warriors. RUNY’s Connor Wallace-Sims, Mark O’Keefe, and Chris Mattina and Utah’s John Cullen all scored 10 points in the match.
RUNY picked up the four-try bonus point in the victory giving them 18 points on the season and leaving them in fifth place in the league table. The Warriors’ seven points on the season leave them in seventh place.
RUNY will welcome the Toronto Arrows (3-3) to New York for their first-ever home match while Utah will enjoy a week off before trying to get back on track against the Houston SaberCats (1-4) in Texas on March 21.
Austin Elite Rugby 19 – 38 Glendale Raptors
The Glendale Raptors (3-2-1) defended Infinity Park for the second-straight week by defeating Austin Elite Rugby (0-6) 38-19 on a chilly Saturday evening in Glendale.
The Raptors benefitted from five different try-scorers to pick up their third win of the season and the second in as many weeks. Robbie Petzer nailed all five of his conversion attempts and his lone penalty goal attempt to lead all scorers in the match with 13 points.
The five points the Raptors picked up in the win helped them jump up to third place from fifth in the league table with 20 points. Austin remains in ninth place with two points on the year.
Glendale will complete their three-game homestand next week when they welcome the San Diego Legion (4-2) to town on Saturday evening. Austin will look to right the ship next Saturday when they host the Seattle Seawolves (4-2).
Houston SaberCats 14 – 27 Seattle Seawolves
It wasn’t easy by any stretch of the imagination, but the Seattle Seawolves (4-2) picked up their third-straight win by defeating the Houston SaberCats (1-4) 27-14 on Sunday evening.
The SaberCats had the ball in Seawolves territory 62 percent of the time, and that eventually resulted in them taking the lead into the 70th minute in what turned out to be a very back-and-forth match. It was the Seawolves who benefitted from later tries from Sequoyah Burke-Combs and Eric Duechle that propelled them to victory. Seattle’s Brock Staller lead all scorers in the match with 10 points.
Seattle’s four points propelled them into second place in the league table. Houston remains in eighth place with six points on the season.
Seattle will travel to Texas to take on Austin Elite Rugby (0-6) while Houston will welcome the first place NOLA Gold (4-1) to town next week.
