COVID-19 Advisory from Major League Rugby
MAJOR LEAGUE RUGBY HAS DECIDED TO CANCEL THE REMAINDER OF THE 2020 SEASON AND TURN ATTENTION TO 2021
March 19, 2020 @ 9:00 AM ET – Major League Rugby (MLR) announced that all remaining 2020 matches are cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 global crisis and the health and safety guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
“On behalf of MLR and all of our teams, I am saddened to announce that the remainder of the 2020 season is cancelled. We believe it is ultimately the correct decision as we factored in health and safety risks for all parties,” said MLR Commissioner George Killebrew, “I want to ensure our fans that there is no doubt MLR will be back in 2021 and will emerge bigger and better than ever before. We will be using this time as an opportunity to grow all aspects of MLR and we’re excited to continue this journey into 2021, and for many years to come.”
MLR will return for the 2021 season. Aside from MLR 2020: Virtual that premiers this Friday, fans can continue to expect exciting initiatives in the coming months.
MAJOR LEAGUE RUGBY SUSPENDS 2020 SEASON FOR 30 DAYS
– Suspension effective immediately –
[March 12 @ 2 PM ET] – Major League Rugby (MLR) has suspended all matches for 30 days, effective immediately, to assess the impact of COVID-19.
The MLR will use this time to determine next steps in regard to the coronavirus pandemic. The league and clubs will communicate strategies for the continuation of the 2020 season when further determinations have been made. Next steps will be based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), and other public health authorities.
“After discussions with all clubs, we have determined that the decision to suspend our season is in the best interest of our community, fans, players, officials, and staff,” said MLR Commissioner George Killebrew. “We will update our fans when further decisions have been made, and we would like to thank them for their patience and continued support during this time.”

[March 11, 2020 @ 2 PM ET] – Major League Rugby (MLR) is continuing to monitor the COVID-19 crisis and will be continuously analyzing the local markets in which MLR events are held.
Community, fan, and player safety will be the primary factors for any decisions made moving forward and all local, state, and federal mandates will be followed. MLR will release announcements as soon as they are available.
