Dean Muir Reaches 50 Caps

On Saturday, March 25th, Dean Muir became the thirty-eighth player in Major League Rugby to appear in 50 matches.

Dean Muir (SaberCat #89) began playing Rugby at Glenwood High School and age grade Rugby with the Sharks Academy, appearing at Craven Week with the Sharks U-18s twice. He attended the University of South Africa and appeared in the Varsity Cup with the TUT Vikings. In 2012 he would make his Currie Cup Debut with the Border Bulldogs. From 2014-2016 he appeared for the Valke in the Currie Cup, and from 2017-2018 he played for Western Province in the Currie Cup. In 2018 he would make his Super Rugby Debut for the Stormers. Following the 2018 Super Rugby season, he joined the Kinetsu Liners in the Japanese Top League.

Dean’s first interest in coming to the US began when he played for Old Blue New York during the 2017 American Rugby Premiership. In 2019 Dean joined the San Diego Legion (Legion #44), appearing in 33 matches across three Major League Rugby seasons. Ahead of the 2022 season, he joined the Houston SaberCats, where he has since served as team captain. Following his first season with the SaberCats, which included a run to the Western Conference Finals, Dean was named to the All-MLR Second Team at Hooker.

He has played senior Rugby for Border Bulldogs, Valke, Western Province, Old Blue New York, Stormers, Kinetsu Liners, and San Diego Legion.

So far in his MLR career, he has scored 19 Tries, made 242 Carries, run 1,366 meters, made 351 tackles, and 901 ruck arrivals.

Major League Rugby is honoring the first 50 players to reach 50 caps and their role in building the legacy of MLR. The latest of the first thirty-eight players to accomplish 50 caps for MLR includes Cole Keith of the New England Free Jacks,  Mike Sheppard of the Toronto Arrows, and Will Leonard of Rugby ATL.
