Seattle Seawolves Re Sign Fly Half Davy Coetzer for 2027

The Seattle Seawolves have re-signed fly half David “Davy” Coetzer for the 2027 Major League Rugby season. Coetzer returns after scoring 104 points in nine starts in his first season with the club, and he will be part of the squad for the Seawolves’ 10th season.

Coetzer joined the Seawolves ahead of the 2026 season and started every match he played. He scored three tries, kicked 25 conversions and 13 penalty goals, and added six try assists. His best afternoon came in Round 4 at the California Legion, where he scored two tries and kicked four conversions. He also started the semifinal against the Legion at Starfire Stadium.

The Houston SaberCats signed Coetzer from the University of Pretoria for the 2022 season. He started all 15 matches that year as Houston reached the playoffs for the first time. In 2023, he scored 135 points, second in the league, and earned All MLR Second XV honors. An All MLR Honorable Mention followed in 2024. He now has 462 points across five MLR seasons.

A native of Plettenberg Bay, South Africa, Coetzer started playing rugby at age seven. He played fly half at Selborne College in East London and came through the Blue Bulls system, winning a national U21 title in 2020. He represented South Africa at the World Rugby U20 Championship in 2018 and 2019.

In 2026, Coetzer entered the USA Rugby eligibility and developmental pathway. He came off the bench for a USA XV in a 25 to 24 win over an Argentina XV in August. In October, he was named to the USA squad to face an Australia XV.

“I’m very excited to return to the Seawolves next season and contribute to an exciting brand of rugby and continue the hunt for the MLR shield.”

David “Davy” Coetzer, Fly Half

“I’m thrilled to welcome Davy back for another season. He’s a fantastic person and teammate who brings energy, commitment and care to everything he does. He has a real influence on the group, not just through his performances on the field, but through the standards he sets, the way he competes and how he contributes to the team environment. As a US-qualified player, he’s determined to represent the Eagles at the 2027 Rugby World Cup, and we’re excited to support that ambition. I believe Davy has an important role to play in driving this team forward, and I’m excited to see the impact he’ll make with the Seawolves in 2027.”
