The Matchup
History meets chaos in Los Angeles. The Seattle Seawolves — MLR’s original dynasty — are one win away from becoming the all-time winningest franchise. The California Legion — one of the league’s newest teams — have been wildly unpredictable at home.
This should be fun.
The Storylines
Seattle: Chasing History
Seattle enters Week 4 tied with San Diego for the most wins in MLR history (72). A victory today makes them the all-time leader.
But there’s a problem: the Seawolves can’t win on the road. They’re 2-8 in their last 10 away games, with their only victories coming at Anthem and Utah. Everyone else has beaten them at home since the start of 2025.
Last week at Anthem: Seattle dominated possession (60%) and territory (58%), made more than double the clean breaks (17 vs 7), but lost 34-25. Why? Discipline. They conceded 17 penalties and had two yellow cards (Redelinghuys 52’, White 79’).
California: Home Chaos
California’s home form has been… something.
-
Week 1: Lost to Miami — a team that had previously lost all 32 MLR games
-
Week 2: Beat New England by 38 points — the three-time defending champions
That’s a 51-point swing. Nobody knows which California shows up on any given Sunday.
What we do know: their attack is electric. They lead MLR in carries, metres made, post-contact metres, defenders beaten, and clean breaks. Gonzalo Bertranou, Tom Pittman, and Ed Timpson are three of the top four ball carriers in the league.
The Tackling Problem
Here’s the stat that should worry both teams: California (75%) and Seattle (77%) have the two worst tackle success rates in the competition.
California is also the easiest team to score against — opponents convert 43% of their red zone visits into tries. Seattle, meanwhile, only scores on 26% of their own red zone trips (second-worst in MLR behind New England’s 18%).
Translation: expect a sloppy, high-event game with plenty of missed tackles and broken plays.
Familiar Faces
Paddy Ryan and Liki Chan-Tung return to California today — both signed for Seattle from San Diego Legion ahead of this season.

The Picks
Spread: Seattle +2.5 (-130 DraftKings) ⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is a pick-em game, and the Seawolves are getting 2.5 points. Yes, Seattle has road struggles — but California just got smashed 48-24 in Chicago after only making 269 metres.
Seattle had three players in Team of the Week despite losing last week (Lindenmuth, Ryan, Rossouw). They’re the better team on paper, even if they can’t close games. Getting nearly a field goal’s worth of points feels generous.
Best book: DraftKings (+2.5)
Total: Over 55.5 (-115 DraftKings) ⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is the best bet on the board.
Both teams have the worst tackle success rates in MLR. California leads the league in attack but bleeds tries (5 per game). Seattle makes clean breaks at will but can’t finish drives.
These teams combined for 72 points when they played last year. With the defensive struggles both sides are showing, 55.5 feels low. Smash the over.
Best book: DraftKings (only book with a total)
Moneyline: Seattle +110 (DraftKings) ⭐⭐⭐
Getting plus-money on the team chasing history? Yes please.
Seattle is the more accomplished franchise. They’ve won two MLR titles. They have three players who made Team of the Week. They have the best goal-kicking in the league.
California’s home form is wildly unreliable — they lost to Miami (!) two weeks ago. If Seattle can clean up their discipline (big if), they win this game outright.
Best book: DraftKings (+110)
